Wiltshire Chocolatier Best in the West!

The best of the South West products were named this week  at the ceremony for the Taste of the West Awards 2007.  Renowned chef and regional food ambassador Michael Caines MBE presented a total of 19 awards including eleven Best of Category product awards.

Chippenham based chocolatier Lick the Spoon  secured the prestigious Best of Bakery and Confectionery title as the winners of the final round of judging were named at the ceremony held at Forde Abbey in Somerset.

This year’s Awards had a record-breaking number of entries from South West based businesses- over 1,600 across all categories. In the highly competitive combined confectionery and Bakery category  Lick the Spoon won the Best of  title for their  “One for me - One for you” handmade chocolate selection.

John Sheaves, Chief Executive Taste of the West, said: "The South West is renowned for its exceptional food and drink produce. The awards aim to provide an important quality benchmark, giving well deserved recognition and reward to those creating the very best produce and places to eat and drink in the region.”

Chocolatier Diana Short is delighted and attributes the success to the “classic combination of quality ingredients and original recipes”. In a quiet moment awards presenter  Michael Caines asked the secret of the jewel like finish of the Aztec Gold and Mulled Blackberry chocolates. Diana described the care taken to hand polish each mould with cocoa butter and ensure that the chocolate is perfectly hand tempered, something that is not achieved with mass production techniques.

The small family business has only been going for 11 months, their chocolates can be bought from their website or from a few select retail outlets, amongst them, The Allington Farm shop who supply them with the cream and local honey for their creations.

“These awards have made all the hard work worthwhile ” says Diana…and here’s to many more!
